The Eras Tour

More than just a tour
The+Eras+Tour

In November of 2022, Taylor Swift announced The Eras Tour. Swift has toured numerous times in her career, but this time around was highly anticipated, as she was planning to showcase all of her different musical eras, ranging from country to pop, to produce an incredible 3 hour show where she performs 45 of her fan-favorite songs. The Eras Tour is very important to Taylor’s fans, referred to as Swifties, because she didn’t get the chance to tour individually for her albums Lover, Folklore, and Evermore due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Swift has numerous opening acts,  including Gracie Abrams, Phoebe Bridgers, and Sabrina Carpenter.

The concept of Taylor having “eras” of her musical career came from her fans, who referred to each of her albums as a different period in her life, each having their own aesthetic and feeling attached to them. For example, her album Folklore has a more gloomy, heartbroken vibe attached to it, while 1989  gives the overall vibe of having fun with your friends in a big city. To further the idea of Taylor having “eras”, a large majority of the attended the concert dressing in an outfit that resembled one of them. For example, some fans dressed in a gold fringe dress to salute Fearless , while some dressed in black and red to be similar to Taylor’s Reputation set outfit.

Taylor’s tour has achieved great success, grossing over $2 billion and has been described as “the performance of a lifetime” by many. A ticket to the Eras tour was extremely hard to come by, as the first online sale for tickets overwhelmed and crashed the TicketMaster site. Nonetheless, fans who couldn’t obtain a ticket still stayed involved in the tour, from watching live streams via TikTok to physically standing outside of the stadium and singing along. On the second night of Eras Tour in Philadelphia, a whopping 20,000 fans gathered outside of The Lincoln Financial Field to listen and sing along to Taylor’s Performance.

Taylor received large welcomes from many of the cities she performed in, including being named the Honorary Mayor in Tampa during her time there and a Taylor Swift light show in Las Vegas. Taylor completed her US-leg of the tour on August 9th in Los Angeles, but the tour will continue into 2024. Taylor is set to perform in South America, Europe, and Asia. Additionally,  Taylor will return to the US in late 2024 to perform in cities she didn’t travel to the first time around.

While Taylor’s setlist through the tour has stayed mostly consistent each night, Taylor performs a different acoustic set every night, surprising the audience with two songs that aren’t on the setlist. At the beginning of the tour, Taylor stated that she would stay away from playing a surprise song more than once, which caused fans to highly anticipate the acoustic set.

Taylor has also announced two album re-recordings in the past year, Speak-Now Taylor’s Version and 1989 Taylor’s Version. Taylor’s Version is very important to Taylor and her fans, as it symbolizes Taylor re-gaining ownership of her music from Scooter Braun, who took the rights to all of Taylor’s Albums prior to Lover. While the original albums still exist after the release of Taylor’s Version albums, many fans choose to listen to Taylor’s Version to show their support. Taylor’s release of Speak Now Taylor’s Version was extremely well received, with 128 million streams on the day of release. Along with Speak Now Taylor’s Version, Taylor released a surprise music video for her vault-track I Can See You, which starred her famous ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner. Lautner was also brought onto the stage to join Taylor during the premiere of the video, which shocked and excited many fans. In addition to album re-releases, Taylor announced Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour film which documented the show(s) in Los Angeles and will premiere in theaters on October 13.
